Spike Lee: Do The Right Thing

Spike Lee: Do The Right Thing

Spike Lee: Do the Right Thing is sure to find its place in the heart of avid book and movie goers.   Set for release this December, the book will find itself among coffee table favorites.  Flipping through the pages readers recollect on vivid scenes from the original movie.

Although landscapes of modern Brooklyn neighborhoods appear to be changing, you get that reminiscent feeling of the late eighties canvassed through-out the first 181 pages.  Lee and Matloff don’t just stop there; readers also get a photo copied relic of the original handwritten script.
The original movie takes place in 1989 in the Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn NY. In this classical

American drama Spike lee frames the stress of neighbors seeking some sense of communal harmony.  Most characters play stereotypic roles of African-Americans during the time when the movie was created.

Throughout the movie there are several conflicts between characters.  Mother-Sister (Ruby Dee) has a problem with the often drunken Da Mayor (Ossie Davis).  Then there is ethnic strain between Puerto Ricans, Blacks and Italians.  Lee’s unmatched ability to capture raw emotion of ethnic conflicts is skillfully captured by his talented cast.

Serious drama takes place in the night of the killing of Radio Man (Bill Nunn) which beckons the old problematic situation of racial profiling. However, as the night comes tension is calmed and resolves the irony of the day.

Much like the movie, the book Spike Lee: Do the Right Thing, captures this unforgettable piece of American history.
